The Foundation is a flexible cast of Nashville players around Matthew. Who shows up depends on the room and the night, and the sound holds either way.
The name is a description, not a slogan. Disco and funk off a stack of 45s. Gospel harmony from the Oak Ridge Boys and outlaw country off a television theme. Hair metal off MTV. Hymns every Sunday at Woodlawn Cumberland. All of it went in, and it all comes back out somewhere.

Matthew Sloan Wallace grew up in Paducah, Kentucky, on hymns at Woodlawn Cumberland Presbyterian and a stack of 45s — Chic, Kool & the Gang, the Oak Ridge Boys — before Van Halen and MTV took over the garage. He started guitar at thirteen, played his first real shows with the Southern gospel group The Disciples, and moved to Nashville in 1998 for Christian rock guitar work. He got it, then spent twenty years playing rooms while working day jobs. The Saturday jam at Miss Zeke’s Juke Joint at Papa Turney’s is where the band took shape: whoever was willing to step out got the chair. The Southern Soul Foundation is the name he gave the result — the roots of every genre mixed into his playing. Live, that means Southern soul, blues and rock with a flexible lineup of Nashville players, from a trio to a six-piece, tuned to the room and the hour.
